Seat Defects

Seat backs that recline during an auto accident are defective. They can cause ejection or their occupants to be shot into the back seat of the car, and this should not happen. This can also create a hazard for anyone seated behind the occupant.

The headrest is critical for occupant protection since it should be designed to absorb impact forces and avoid critical injuries. The seat pan should be designed to absorb downward forces to avoid spinal injuries when a vehicle lands on its wheels during an accident.

Seats may be defective when they:

  • Collapse
  • Bend or flex severely
  • Do not absorb appropriate force levels
