Areas of Practice
There are typically two types of glass utilized in vehicles: tempered glass and laminated glass. Laminated glass, used in windshields, will not shatter since it incorporates a thin layer of laminate between two pieces of tempered glass. Tempered glass, which is used in the other windows, will shatter into many small pieces when it is broken.
If an occupant is ejected in a crash, the probability of catastrophic injury or death dramatically increases. Many lives could be saved, and many serious injuries could be prevented, with the use of laminated glass, which helps prevent occupant ejection in a crash. A lack of laminated glass is considered a design defect.
