Rollover Defects

A safe vehicle should handle appropriately and should not roll over due to the friction forces that are generated when the tires slide, or yaw, on a normal paved roadway.

Defective designs can result when manufacturers do not properly test their vehicles for rollover. Many of the current tests utilized by manufacturers do not measure the limit handling capabilities of the vehicles and are performed in computer simulations that do not replicate real world conditions.

Defects related to rollover include:

  • A narrow track width
  • A short wheelbase
  • A high center of gravity
  • Lack of stability control
